Senate President Pro Tem Perata Endorses Prop 87
Wanting California to continue being the leader in developing clean energy alternatives, Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata (D-Oakland) endorsed Prop. 87 saying it’s time major oil companies help shoulder the financial burden of cleaning up the air.
“Oil companies pay when they drill for oil in Oklahoma, Alaska and Texas, but not in California. That’s just plain wrong,” said Perata. “I support Prop. 87 because it will make sure oil companies pay their fair share for drilling in California and help us continue to lead the way in developing clean energy alternatives.”
Perata also announced an agreement with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Assembly Bill 32, which will provide the state with a range of tools for cutting carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases 25% by 2020.
Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, the co-author of the bill, predicted that the creation of such a pioneering greenhouse gas reduction program in California would be followed by similar initiatives in other states. Environmentalists throughout the state praised the agreement as another example of California leading the way to cleaner air.
Together, with Prop 87 and AB 32, California will lead the nation in breaking our addiction to oil and reducing greenhouse gasses that cause global climate change.
