Who’s Misleading Who Here?

So the largest oil companies in the world are suing us for misleading voters? Yep, that’s right: ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell and Occidental are saying that their TV media blitz didn’t work because they couldn’t use the www.noon87.com domain name. They’re worried that more and more voters know that big oil isn’t paying their fair share in California. In full disclosure, we control this domain name and are using it to tell voters the facts about who’s really behind the Anti-87 campaign.

We know that the oil companies can tie us up in court for decades if they want, so we made this settlement offer to the oil companies today:

Dear Oil Company Executives:

We are writing to offer settlement of the lawsuit your agents filed against The California Clean Energy Initiative regarding the use of certain Web addresses. We will immediately turn over to you the Web addresses in question provided you and your agents agree with our terms, which are as follows:

• Stop basing your campaign against Proposition 87 on junk science and fiction.

• Stop using the name "Californians Against Higher Taxes" and instead use one reflecting that the campaign against Proposition 87 is bankrolled by Chevron, Shell, Exxon Mobil, Occidental and other oil companies.

• Put the oil companies front and center in your advertising, instead of hiding behind front people and concealing the true backers of Proposition 87: Chevron, Shell, Exxon Mobil, Occidental and other oil companies.

As a gesture of good faith and to truth in advertising, we have redesigned what people see when they visit the Web addresses mentioned in your suit. You may see the redesign at www.noon87.com.

We thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

The Yes on 87 Campaign
